KOTA KINABALU: The mushrooming property sector in the Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC) in Lahad Datu shows the cluster is becoming successful, said Sabah Industrial Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah.
The availability of sufficient housing and commercial centres in the surrounding area is attracting investors, and property developers would not have gone there if they had not seen its potential, he told reporters after launching the SME/One District One Industry Carnival here today.
"We want POIC to be successful and with more people coming to work there, adequate facilities like residential areas and other amenities are needed," he said in response to a recent claim by DAP Sabah Chairman Jimmy Wong that the POIC had deviated from its palm oil role and is seen as a boon for the property sector instead.
Meanwhile, Tan said Wong, who is also the state assemblyman for Sri Tanjung, should instead be worried about what has happened in DAP-ruled Penang instead of showing concern about Sabah affairs if he has not been helping the state to develop further.
According to Tan, the Sabah government had been practising good governance which led to the state's investment value multiplying 10 times since last year.
"In the first quarter of last year, we achieved about RM1 billion in investments. This year, we made about RM10 billion, while investments in Penang dropped during the same period. That should be of his (Wong's) concern," he said.
He also said Wong must have made the claim seeing that the Barisan Nasional government in Sabah was doing well in its administration compared to DAP in Penang.
